Those of us who recall exposes of the historic financial acumen of the Roman Catholic Church remain puzzled why it allowed a pope to stay·in power whose retrograde policies were contributing to its entrepreneurial decline, especially in the Western countries that generated most of its wealth. In a corporation with an independent board of directors, a chief so inept would have been sent away with a golden parachute long before his demise.
