This August, New Jersey did away with every aspect of car inspections except emissions testing. New Jersey inspections used to include checking brakes, tires, lights, turn signals, and windshield wipers, among other things. According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, each of the old inspections cost the state (taxpayers) $21.95. For emissions only, inspections should now drop to a cost of $3.24 each.
